The English Civil Wars (1638 o51) comprised the deadliest conflict ever fought on British soil, in which brother took up arms against brother, father fought against son, and towns, cities and villages fortified themselves in the cause of Royalists or Parliamentarians. Although much historical attention has focused on the events in England and the key battles of Edgehill, Marston Moor and Naseby, this was a conflict that engulfed the entirety of the Three Kingdoms and led to a trial and execution that profoundly shaped the British monarchy and Parliament.

Colonel Nick Lipscombe MSc FRHistS served for 34 years in the British Army, seeing considerable operational duty with the British and American armies. He was awarded the US Bronze Star in 2006. He is an accomplished historian, author and lecturer. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2015. He has concentrated on the Napoleonic Wars and the Peninsular War in particular but is now working on projects associated with the English Civil War. He is a part-time tutor at Oxford University, and a member of numerous historical societies.
